Handmade furniture can’t be mistaken for anything other than what it is. Years of blood sweat and tears, elegantly bonded in a forever form that is starkly different from anything you will find online or in your local furniture store.
Why is that?
That is the question most people who’ve never seen a handcrafted piece would ask, but the answer is simple. Cost. The “wood” most people are accustomed to isn’t quite that, but merely a by-product of it. Real, solid wood is heavy, cumbersome and difficult to work with. It requires tens of thousands of dollars in tools, but most importantly years of practical experience to get the most out of them.
A solid wood end table could easily weigh as much if not more than your standard particle board dining table, or softwood equivalent and a solid wood dining table could weigh as much, if not more than your fridge. There’s also the size. A piece is designed and crafted as a single item. Not to be shipped in a box around the world to perspective buyers, but to only one.
What has been cleverly designed to fit in a box and assembled in hours serves its purpose. The same way what has been cleverly designed to withstand the test of torsion, gravity, wear and tear, and years of abuse to last for generations.
The feeling we’ve all become accustomed to when touching something store bought is that of consistency, somewhat satin and relative durability. Nothing to note, but not an eye sore. This heavily contrasts with the natural finish of an oil that has seeped deep into the fibers and grain of a tree that stood 15 feet tall for over a century. Cathedral patterns that saw baby formula, to college acceptance letters. A real conversation piece.
I say all this to say everything in life serves a purpose. I’d be a liar if I didn’t admit I still to this day have some Ikea furniture in my home, but there comes a time when what’s good for right now is no longer the priority. At Two Toned Craftworks we specialize in today, tomorrow and forever. A custom made piece of furniture is a work of art that can last generations. If you’ve read this far, I assume you’re ready to enter that stage of life and we would love nothing more than to make your journey as delightfully special for you as it is for us to make it.
